The 5G auction has been completed, the Cellfie Mobile operator will introduce new technologies in Georgia, the National Communications Commission announced.

It is planned to introduce 5G technology in the country within three to five years.

The auction went without competitors – the company Cellfie was the only participant.

Cellfie Mobile is the former Beeline, which announced its rebranding in April of this year, at that time the operator served 1.3 million subscribers. Before that, Georgian businessman Khvicha Makatsaria bought VEON-Georgia, which operated under the Beeline brand, from the telecommunications holding VEON.

The operator will be given the frequency bands 2600 MHz and 1800 MHz. Cellfie was also announced as the winner of the combined lot, within which he will receive the right to use the frequency ranges 700 MHz and 3400-3600 MHz.

The frequencies of 2600 and 3600 MHz will provide several times the Internet speed in large settlements, and the frequencies of 700 and 800 MHz will be used mainly to cover large spaces with a lower population density.

Fees for lots amounted to 226,800, 226,800 and 1,386,000 lari, and for a combined 2,657,445 lari.  30% of the amount must be paid within a month.  Cellfie is obliged to allow the mobile Virtual network operator (MVNO) to access its own infrastructure. For this, he will be given a 20% discount.

Cellfie Mobile has announced that it will introduce fifth-generation Internet technologies together with Finnish technology giant Nokia, which will not only build new base stations, but also modernize existing ones.

The process of implementing 5G in Georgia turned out to be so complicated and ambiguous that two of the largest market players, Magti and Silknet, decided not to participate in the auction, the IT News channel notes. These two companies own more than 70% of the telecommunications market in Georgia and as a result, it turned out that 5G will be implemented in the country without them.
