American warning: Kelly Degnan advises Tbilisi to be careful with Beijing
US Ambassador Kelly Degnan, who is leaving Georgia, finally urged caution about political commitments to China.
She commented on the announcement of the transition of Georgia and China to the level of strategic partnership following the visit of Prime Minister Garibashvili to Beijing.
"I believe that the joint statement that was signed is quite loaded with political commitments that Georgia has undertaken.... Georgia has expressed clear support for China's territorial integrity and sovereignty. But I have not seen the reciprocal promise of the People's Republic of China on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia", Degnan said in an interview with Radio Liberty.
She recalled that 20% of Georgia's territory is occupied by Russia, a country with which China is establishing close relations.
The ambassador also noted that "some political commitments may contribute to China's attempts to transform the world towards a more authoritarian one." And she expressed doubt that democratic values, which are important for Georgia and its Western partners, share
People's Republic of China.
