Georgia should offer Russia not some new formats of negotiations, but a direct dialogue, says the leader of the Georgian opposition party "Democratic movement", former speaker of the Parliament Nino Burjanadze.

"We should not offer a new" Normandy format" to the Russian leadership, but a direct dialogue, " Burjanadze told reporters on Wednesday, commenting on Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili's statement that the existing format of the international Geneva discussions on Transcaucasia is not effective and it is necessary to look for new formats similar to the "Normandy" created to resolve the situation in Eastern Ukraine.

According to Burjanadze, Russia will not agree to this kind of new format and it is initially a dead idea, an attempt to show that supposedly "you are doing something in the international arena".

"If the President or someone from this leadership (of Georgia) really wants to start a new stage in Georgian-Russian relations, then we need to start preparing for a direct dialogue. Yes, dialogue does not mean concessions, Yes, dialogue does not mean giving up the interests of the state. Not to talk, to refuse dialogue, to come up with some formats that we know in advance that will be rejected by Russia, this means to concede and maintain the status quo that suits Russia and in any case not Georgia, " she said.

At the same time, Burjanadze is sure that today it is necessary to preserve all existing formats, including the Geneva one. According to her, direct dialogue with Russia does not mean that Georgia should not have support from the West.

On the eve of December 24, in an interview with the Georgian First channel, Zurabishvili said that Georgia is "stuck" in the Geneva format, and such technical formats in relations with Russia do not give anything. Zurabishvili also expressed an opinion on the need to create such a format as, for example, "Normandy".
