The new power plant is designed to produce electricity in the winter, when production at the country's hydroelectric power station is reduced.

The newly built thermal power plant in Gardabani (Kvemo Kartli region) with a capacity of 230 megawatts is working in a test mode and supplies electricity to the Unified power system of Georgia, the press service of the Georgian oil and gas Corporation (GOGC) told Sputnik Georgia.

The construction of "Gardaban heat station 2" was carried out by the Chinese company China Tianchen Engineering Corporation (CTEC) with funding from GOGC. The investment amounted to $ 180 million.

"The project has strategic importance for the independence of the Georgian energy system, to enhance the energy security of the country and irreversible development of the energy sector as a whole", – said the press service of the Corporation.

The construction phase lasted from February 2018 to December 2019. Now the power plant provides electricity generation in the winter season of 2020.

The implementation of such projects is a priority, as in winter it is impossible to satisfy the growing consumption in Georgia by local generation facilities.

For the first time in Georgia, a new thermal power plant is equipped with a so-called start-from-zero function, which implies the primary supply of electricity to the grid and the restoration of a complete system from scratch during a state of emergency.

The TPP consumes almost twice as much gas, and it is more economical compared to the old units in Georgia, running on natural gas.
