The Ministry of Finance of Georgia once again warns TV companies about the need to pay off debts to the state budget. The principal amount of debt accumulated since October 1, 2019, must be repaid in one day. This is stated in the message published today on the website of the Ministry of Finance.

The Agency recalls that on August 14, 2019, Finance Minister Ivane Machavariani publicly invited TV companies to submit proposals on debt restructuring, as well as to start paying current debts.

In August, the Minister stated that large debts had accumulated at Rustavi-2 TV channels — 28 million lari (more than 9.5 million dollars), "Imedi" — up to 19 million lari (about 6.5 million dollars) and "Maestro" — more than 8 million lari (about 2.7 million dollars).

In connection with the debt restructuring, the process of negotiations between the revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance and broadcasters continues. As for the current tax liabilities, we have not paid them, which is why the revenue Service is forced to carry out activities provided for by the Tax code - noted in the Department.

The statement of Finance Ministry stresses that the Agency is aware of the crucial role of media in democratic development of Georgia, and that is why the state taking into account their interests, as evidenced by the benefits accrued during several years of tax debt, and ongoing to this day talks about the schedule of their payment.

The Department assures that the tax authority is not obliged to make a public warning to the payer, so this statement of the Ministry of Finance serves the interests of broadcasters.

According to the Ministry of Finance, such a concession to the media creates a non-competitive environment, and puts in unequal conditions other taxpayers who pay in good faith both current taxes and old debts.

The state is obliged to protect the interests of all taxpayers, as well as to effectively manage public finances, which means that taxpayers ' money should be spent on each citizen, the state, to fulfill both social and other important obligations  - the report says.
