«Ambassador Degnan condemns violence against media in Georgia», — according to the information distributed by the US Embassy in Georgia.

Embassy releases statement from US Ambassador Kelly Degnan:

«I received members of the Charter of Journalistic Ethics of Georgia and the Coalition for Media Advocacy to find out their opinion about the media environment in Georgia.

We discussed the alarming deterioration of the media environment and the alarming increase in cases of harassment and physical attacks on journalists.

Democracies should have free and independent media.

Across the political spectrum, the media must be free to inform the public and broadcast key events..

The U.S. Embassy supports Charter's efforts to assist journalists in covering events and issues that are important to the people of Georgia in a fair, balanced and ethical manner.

The United States strongly condemns the violence and harassment of journalists. People who threaten and attack journalists must be held accountable.

The shocking violence that occurred on July 5 and 6 reminds us of the importance of bringing the organizers of the violence must be held accountable. Impunity gives the impression that violence is acceptable, but violence is never acceptable.

The responsibility for ensuring a free and open media environment lies with those in power. The Georgian Government should take active steps to ensure the safety of journalists.

Those people who attack journalists should not go unpunished, because if they go unpunished then this will threaten democracy in Georgia, They must be punished regardless of their political views. A free and independent press is the hallmark of a truly democratic society,” said Kelly Degnan.
