The pro-Iranian Hashd al-Shaabi militia staged a military parade on the streets of Sinjar, even though, according to an agreement between Erbil and Baghdad, they must leave this Yazidi area in northern Iraq.

Last year, Erbil and Baghdad announced the signing of a historic agreement under which Shiite militias and armed groups affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers ' Party (PKK) were to leave Sinjar and its environs.

The mayor of Sinjar, Mahma Khalil, said that on February 11, Hashd al-Shaabi reinforcements arrived in Sinjar, and a military parade was held on the streets of the war-torn city.

"It seems that they do not intend to implement the agreement," Khalil said.

Following a large-scale military assault by the Iraqi army under former Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi in 2017, Kurdish forces were pushed out of disputed Kurdish territories in northern Iraq, including Sinjar. Since then, the area has been under the control of Hashd al-Shaabi and armed groups affiliated with the PKK, which has negatively affected stability and hindered the return of Yazidi refugees.
