In connection with the coronavirus pandemic, Georgia has closed its borders with all countries since March 2020 and canceled regular flights. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, 80.4% fewer international visitors visited Georgia in 2020 than in 2019, according to the materials of the National Tourism Administration of the country.

According to the National Tourism Administration of Georgia, in 2020, foreigners made 1.5 million visits to Georgia. In 2019, their number was 7.7 million.

Tourists in the era of the pandemic – who are they?

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Georgia has closed its borders with all countries since March 2020 and canceled regular flights, with some exceptions. In particular, Georgian citizens are allowed to cross the border, if they return to their homeland, and transit cargo carriers. The country also stopped air traffic in all directions. Only special flights were carried out from Georgia and back, aimed at returning citizens of the country to their homeland.

Since the middle of the summer of last year, the restoration of regular flights has begun. Initially, flights to Munich, Riga and Paris were resumed. Since November, regular flights to Amsterdam, Vienna, Berlin and Doha have been resumed (until November, these airlines operated charter flights). However, due to the deterioration of the epidemic situation, the ban was extended until February 1.

Loss of countries by number of visitors to Georgia by 2020

Country Number of visitors Decrease

Turkey 335 580 71.0

Azerbaijan 295 132 80.7

Armenia 260 965 80.9

Russia 208677 85.8

Ukraine 42414 79.6

According to the expert in the field of tourism, Professor Niko Kvaratskhelia, the visitors mentioned in the statistics are people who came to Georgia from neighboring countries.

"We consider as visitors those transit passengers who cross Georgia and go to third countries. Perhaps they are trailer drivers who transport goods that are fixed at the border. Probably, this is the number that is recorded at the border points that they crossed the Georgian border. And in Georgia, they were hardly engaged in tourism," Kvaratskheliya told Sputnik Georgia.

According to him, Georgia is obliged to record them in accordance with international standards.

According to the methodology, all visitors who spend more than 24 hours in Georgia are automatically considered tourists, the expert stressed.
