At the Rikota Pass, which is part of the international East-West highway, construction of the longest tunnel has begun. This is reported by the Department of Highways of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia.

The length of the tunnel will be 1.8 kilometers, of which 200 meters have already been penetrated. The construction of the tunnel is parallel to the tunnel located on the Chumateleti – Khevi road segment.

"Despite the pandemic, the construction of the Ricotta site did not stop for a single day. This is a 52-kilometer highway that will significantly improve and halve the travel time. This will completely change the current safety and speed standards. This is one of the unique projects that is being implemented in modern history, " said Maya Tskitishvili, Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure, who arrived at the construction site.

In total, 53 bridges and 96 tunnels are planned to be built on Rikoti, and more than half of these structures are already under construction, the Deputy Prime Minister said.

"The tunnel we are currently in will be the longest in Georgia until Kvesheti-Kobi (in Kazbegi district) is built. In general, this year, 40% more funding is provided for the construction of high — speed highways, which will ensure significant progress," Tskitishvili said.

Currently, work is underway on the Chumateleti–Khevi – 11.7 kilometers, Khevi–Ubisa — 12.2 kilometers and Ubisa–Shorapani — 13 kilometers road sections. As for the Shorapani – Argveti section, work will begin here in the near future.

According to the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure, 6 tunnels have already been breached at the Rikot Pass. Construction work is underway on a total of 39 tunnels and 61 bridges.

The East-West highway, or European Transit Road E-60, is the second largest European transit corridor, starting in Brest (France) and ending in Irkeshtam (Kyrgyzstan). In Georgia, the E-60 begins at the border with Azerbaijan and ends on the Black Sea coast, near the port of Poti. The corridor is 392 km long on the territory of Georgia.
