In 2020, European aviation conducted 6.1 million fewer flights than last year, and more than half of the aircraft in Europe were stopped, according to Eurocontrol (European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation).

In a recently published document titled "What COVID-19 Did to European Aviation in 2020 and the Outlook for 2021," the organization notes that Georgia's air traffic volume has declined more than in any other European state.

In 2020, the number of flights in Georgia decreased by 73% or 34 thousand flights.

In general, the level of flights in 2020 in Europe was equal to the indicators of the mid-1980s, Eurocontrol notes. Other countries where the number of flights has significantly decreased are Israel (—68%, - 120 thousand flights) and Morocco (—65%, - 131 thousand flights). Eurocontrol explains that, unlike other European countries, Georgia, Israel and Morocco did not see a significant recovery in air traffic over the summer.

The reduction of flights in other countries is as follows:

United Kingdom (- 1.3 million flights — - 61%)

Germany (- 1.2 million flights — - 56%)

Spain (- 1.0 million flights — - 61%)

France (- 853 thousand flights — - 54%)

Italy (- 797 thousand, — 60%)

"We are confident that recovery will begin in 2021 as the vaccine spreads around the world. However, the entire aviation sector will continue to need financial support in the coming years. And if we really want to recover and get even better in 2021, we need to start addressing the core issues, such as how to finance, regulate and integrate the aviation system, and how to ensure sustainability," said Eamonn Brennan, CEO of Eurocontrol.

Georgia has closed regular flights since March 2020. Currently, there are flights from Germany, France, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia to Georgia from Europe. Citizens of these countries can come to Georgia unconditionally, but they will have to spend eight days in quarantine.

According to statistics, the least affected country in terms of air travel was Norway due to its critical dependence on air traffic. The volume of air traffic in Norway decreased by 40% compared to 2019, when it amounted to 205 thousand flights. After Norway, the volume of air traffic decreased the least in Albania-46%, and Luxembourg-47%.
