Until the end of distance learning in Georgia, mobile Internet for schoolchildren and teachers will be available at reduced rates. The National Communications Commission of Georgia (GNCC) adopted a corresponding decision at a meeting on December 31, the Georgian service of Radio Liberty reports.

The decision was made based on a statement sent to GNCC by Magti, Geocell (Silknet) and Beeline (Vion Georgia) operators. It concerns the academic year 2020-2021. As you know, due to the coronavirus pandemic, all schools in Georgia have been switched to remote control.

According to the GNCC resolution, companies can now offer students and teachers a 20 GB Internet package for 30 days for just 10 GEL. Currently, such a package for Magti and Geocell subscribers’ costs 30 GEL. Beeline does not have a similar offer, but 10 GB (with unlimited night Internet) costs 17 GEL.

In order to establish preferential tariffs, the operator is now allowed to subsidize.

"That is, we give the go — ahead for unprofitable tariffs," GNCC Chairman Kakha Bekauri said at the meeting.

The Ministry of Education of Georgia will determine the list of subscribers who will be able to use reduced tariffs. According to Radio Liberty, the agency could not name specific dates, noting that they are now working on technical issues.
