According to the Cato Institute's Human Freedom Index 2020, Georgia is a leader in the Caucasus and Central Asia

According to a study by the Washington-based Cato Research Institute, Georgia is assigned 7.87 points in the human freedom index, while in Armenia the human freedom index is 7.69, while in Azerbaijan it is 6.29.

According to the same study, Georgia ranks 40th among 162 countries in the world on the index of human freedom.

The Freedom index is a broad measure of a person's freedom, which is perceived as the absence of forced restrictions.

The study uses 76 indicators of personal and economic freedom in the following areas: rule of law, protection and security, movement, religion, associations, assembly and civil society, expression and information, identity and relationships, size of government, legal system and property rights, access to reliable money, freedom of regulation of international trade, credit, labor and business regulation.

The maximum score in the Human freedom index is 10.

The highest scores on the Human Freedom Index in the Cato Institute study were: New Zealand (8.87), Switzerland (8.82) and Hong Kong (8.74). The top ten also included Denmark, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Estonia, Germany and Sweden.

Venezuela (4.08), Sudan (4.01) and Syria (3.97) have the worst results in the 2020 study.
