the issue of lifting restrictions for the retail sector in the new year period remains open. the interdepartmental coordination council will make a final decision on the operation of stores and shopping centers on December 21. this was announced after a meeting of businessmen with acting Minister of Economy of Georgia Natia Turnava.

due to the spread of coronavirus, since November 28 in Tbilisi and seven other major cities of Georgia – Batumi, Kutaisi, Rustavi, Gori, Poti, Zugdidi, Telavi – the work of clothing and construction markets, fairs, shopping centers, and most retail facilities has been banned. it was expected that from December 24 to January 2, these restrictions will be lifted. epidemiologists strongly opposed the proposed plan, calling into question the announced easing.

"we have voiced our demands. the relevant ministry will discuss them, and the final decision will be known in the coming days. Presumably, we will learn about it on December 20-21, " Levan Karalashvili, director of the Tbilisi Central Shopping Center, told reporters.

Epidemiologists fear that easing during the holidays will increase the rate of spread of COVID-19 and negate the results achieved due to strict restrictions. over the past two weeks, the daily increase in cases has almost halved — from more than 5 thousand to less than 3 thousand.

From December 24, public transport and intercity passenger transportation will also resume in the country.
