After the expiration of the period of legal stay in Georgia, foreigners are obliged to leave the country, otherwise they face a fine or even expulsion with a ban on entry.

Foreigners or persons without citizenship who were unable to leave Georgia due to the coronavirus pandemic have been extended the period of legal stay in the country until July 1, 2021, the website of the "Legislative Bulletin of Georgia" says.

amendments were made to the resolution" on measures to prevent the possible spread of a new coronavirus in georgia and approval of the rapid response plan for cases of a new coronavirus disease " dated january 28, 2020.

in connection with the coronavirus pandemic, the georgian authorities have activated a preferential regime for legal stay of foreigners and stateless persons on the territory of georgia since march 14. But from August 1, all of them were automatically considered illegal immigrants. Therefore, the authorities soon allowed foreigners to stay in the country until December 31.

According to the amendments, only those foreign citizens whose stay has expired and who were unable to leave the country due to certain reasons can stay in Georgia:

- the State of which they are citizens is at high risk of infection;

- the State of which they are citizens has imposed restrictions on entry from abroad;

- they are in hospital, in quarantine, or in self-isolation;

- they are prevented from returning to the state of which they are citizens by the lack of flights.

After the expiration of the period of legal stay in Georgia, foreigners are obliged to leave the country, otherwise they face a fine or even expulsion with a ban on entry for a certain period – from two to five years.

The decision on expulsion is made by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia – in each case it is individual.

As for fines, from the moment of expiration of the term for three months, it is 180 lari (about 55 dollars), and then doubles.
