People who have had the coronavirus must be vaccinated against the flu, as they can get sick and dangerous so-called "swine flu". This was stated today at a briefing by the head of the National center for disease control and public health Amiran Gamkrelidze.

"People who have had a coronavirus can also get sick with the flu virus, so they must be vaccinated. The coronavirus will not protect you from the flu, but the vaccination will protect you, " Gamkrelidze said.

Epidemiologists say that a seasonal flu virus has already appeared in Georgia – the influenza b virus has been recorded, while the influenza a virus, i.e. H1N1, has not yet been recorded.

There is an assumption that this year's flu season will be relatively milder than in previous years, as restrictions apply, citizens wear masks, wash and disinfect their hands more often. However, this, according to Gamkrelidze, does not give reason to calm down.

"We don't know how active the flu will be this year. If we take the experience of the southern hemisphere, the summer flu was less active there. There are many versions in this regard, including the fact that people are used to observing preventive measures – wearing masks, more people have been vaccinated against the flu, more people observe distance and sanitary standards," Gamkrelidze said.

He once again reminded that Georgia has purchased a sufficient amount of flu vaccine this year – 235 thousand doses, and called on everyone, especially pregnant women, to get vaccinated.

Usually, the flu virus in Georgia appears in November and reaches its peak in December-January. The popularization of the flu vaccine among the population of Georgia began in 2014-2015. In 2018, the country purchased 40 thousand vaccines, but a large amount of the drug could not be mastered. But in 2019, when the country purchased 100,000 doses of vaccines, only a small part remained unused.
