In Georgia, one in seven women is subjected to violence either in the family, at work, or by a partner.

Georgia is launching a new project "Violence against women and girls in Georgia", which will be implemented with the support of the UN Women's organization and the European Union.

The project was launched as part of the current EU human rights Week and the Campaign against gender-based violence in Georgia, which runs from November 25 to December 10 worldwide, Imedi TV channel reports.

The aim of the project is to prevent domestic violence and violence against women and to strengthen policies and legislation to combat these types of crimes, as well as to strengthen the capacity of relevant institutions.

At the same time, the project aims to change negative gender stereotypes, social norms and attitudes in society, support women's rights and promote gender equality. The three-year project will be implemented everywhere, but special attention will be paid to the regions of Kvemo Kartli and Guria.

"In theory, gender equality is a fairly simple concept, but it is difficult to implement it in practice. So far, no country has claimed to have achieved full gender equality, although some countries have achieved more in this regard than others. As long as a woman is a victim of one of the ugliest and most unacceptable forms of inequality – domestic violence, as long as every seventh woman in Georgia is subjected to violence by her husband or partner, the EU will continue to work tirelessly with Georgia to promote gender equality at all levels," said EU Ambassador to Georgia Karl Hartzel.

To achieve the project's goals, the UN Women's organization and the United Nations population Fund will actively work with government agencies to address violence against women, women's rights defenders, civil society, as well as the media and local authorities in the regions.
