Exports of Georgian products have grown due to the expansion of the geography of sales markets - free trade agreements have been signed with the EU, Turkey and China.

Georgia began to import more goods – in January-February 2020, imports amounted to 1.3 billion dollars, which is 6.8% more than in the first two months of 2019, according to the materials of the national statistics service of the country "Sakstat".

During the reporting period, exports also increased – since the beginning of 2020, Georgian products were exported by 526.3 million dollars, which is 4.5% more than in the same period of 2019.

In General, foreign trade turnover in January-February 2020 increased by 6.1% compared to the same period in 2019 and amounted to 1.86 billion dollars (excluding unorganized trade).

The Ministry of economy and sustainable development explains the growth of exports by several factors, including the expansion of the geography of sales markets.

In particular, the government of Georgia is actively working on further growth and diversification of exports. New agreements in the field of free trade contribute to the expansion of markets for Georgian products, diversification of export products and create an opportunity for additional growth for export potential.

Sales market

Georgia successfully trades with its neighbors – from year to year, the leaders are Turkey, Russia and Azerbaijan, as well as China, the EU and CIS countries. Data on exports and imports with these countries for January 2020 has not yet been distributed by Sakstat.

Successfully developing trade relations with the countries of the European Union. Georgia has recently concluded free trade agreements with the EU, the European free trade Association (EFTA) countries, Turkey, Hong Kong and China.

Georgia, even before Brexit came into force, ratified the free trade agreement with the UK and expects the same from the British side.

Free trade negotiations will soon begin with India. The text of the agreement is already ready, and negotiation groups have also been set up on both sides, which are currently waiting to determine the date of the first round of negotiations.

The possibility of signing such agreements with Japan and the United States is being actively discussed.
