The ex-interior Minister, who spent almost seven years in prison, was met at the gates of the prison by former associates and leaders of other opposition parties

Ex-Prime Minister of Georgia and former Minister of internal Affairs of Georgia Vano Merabishvili was released after 6 years and 9 months of imprisonment, correspondent reports. Sputnik Georgia from the scene.

Leaders and activists of the "National movement", "European Georgia" and a number of other opposition parties meet Merabishvili at the prison.

"We came here as his friends. Which party he will be in, he will make a decision and tell himself, "said Tengiz Gunava, a representative of the European Georgia – movement for freedom party.

Merabishvili is the author of the most successful, according to experts, reform in Georgia — the creation of a new type of police. Under him, zero tolerance of crime was proclaimed – and order on the streets was ensured by overcrowded prisons, where there were not enough beds and prisoners slept in three shifts. Under Merabishvili, the war against "thieves in law" also began.

Merabishvili was arrested in may 2013. He was charged in six high profile cases

He was convicted of illegal seizure of a winery, dispersal of an action on may 26, 2011 in Tbilisi, for bribing voters before the 2012 parliamentary elections, as well as in the case of the 2005 beating of MP Valery Gelashvili by special forces and found guilty in the high-profile case of the murder of Girgvliani. Another case of the November 2007 crackdown on the Imedi TV channel is still pending in court.
