The winner of the tender must build a 6.4-kilometer four-lane road with an asphalt-concrete surface, with 11 bridges and five tunnels.

The Department of highways of the Ministry of regional Development of Georgia announced a tender for the construction of the second section of the Zemo Osiauri-Chumateleti international highway East-West, according to a statement on the Agency's website. The East-West route, or European transit road E-60, is the second largest European transit corridor, which begins in Brest (France) and ends in Irkeshtam (Kyrgyzstan). In Georgia, the E-60 begins on the border with Azerbaijan and ends on The black sea coast, near the port of Poti. The length of the corridor in Georgia is 392 km. Under the terms of the tender, the winning company must build a 6.4-kilometer four-lane road with an asphalt-concrete surface, with 11 bridges and five tunnels in 27 months. It should also build underground passages and a drainage system during this period.

According to the Department, the road for which the world Bank allocates funding goes to the Rikot pass and is a bypass road that skirts Khashuri, Surami, and Chumateleti.

In total, it is planned to build a road up to 51.6 kilometers long on the RIKOR pass, which will include 96 bridges and 53 tunnels. Construction of the road should be completed in June 2022.

Bridges and tunnels are being actively built on the Rikot pass

The construction itself on the Rikoti pass is divided into four sections: the Chumateleti–Khevi section, 11.7 kilometers long, the Khevi–Ubisa section, 12.2 kilometers long, the Ubisa–Shorapani section, 13 kilometers long, and the Shorapani–Argveta section, 14.7 kilometers long. In total, up to one billion dollars will be spent on the project.

A tunnel passes through the Rikot pass, which is located on the 143rd kilometer of the Tbilisi–Senaki–Leselidze highway of international significance. Many transit cargo routes follow this route.

More than 60% of external cargo is transported via the East–West Expressway. The improvement of this highway is very important for turning Georgia into a transport and logistics hub, which will contribute to the development of trade relations with Central Asia and the Far East on the one hand, and with Turkey and Europe on the other.
