The national center for disease control and public health of Georgia called on schools and medical institutions in the country to take care of hygiene standards in order to reduce the risk of respiratory diseases.

According to the head of the center, Amiran Gamkrelidze, letters with relevant recommendations have already been sent to educational institutions and large hospitals.

"In this way, we will significantly reduce the risk of spreading respiratory diseases. I would like to stress once again that every institution should be provided with maximum disinfection facilities. If they do not exist, then at least there should be soap everywhere, so that people often wash their hands, " Gamkrelidze said.

He noted that the residents of Georgia are gradually changing their negative attitude to flu vaccination. So, for the 2019-2020 season, three times more people were vaccinated than last winter. Gamkrelidze believes that this is why the current flu season in Georgia is "relatively calm".

"I especially want to address the heads of schools and educational institutions, schools, kindergartens and universities. During this period, even if there is no danger of coronavirus infection, there is a flu season in the country... compliance with hygiene standards is the best way to protect against flu and respiratory infections, " he added.

Before the start of the press conference, the National center for disease control of Georgia observed a minute's silence in memory of the Chinese doctor Li Wenglian, who was one of the first to warn about the danger of spreading a new type of pneumonia and himself died from the coronavirus.

"Unfortunately, the doctor who was the first to sound the alarm in December in connection with this infection has died. A young doctor who worked in one of the clinics in Wuhan noticed that there were cases of a certain respiratory infection of unknown etiology, which was allegedly similar to SARI, whose epidermis was in China in 2003. This doctor, Mr. Lee Wenliang, unfortunately, died. He sacrificed his life in the fight against this disease, " Gamkrelidze said.
