The Ministry of Health of Georgia will inform the population of Georgia about the spread of coronavirus infection, if such a need arises and so far nothing special is happening, said the head of the department Zurab Azarashvili.

The National Center for Disease Control and Public Health of Georgia recently denied information about the detection of infection in the country with a new variant of omicron, the strain of coronavirus EG.5 ("Eris"). The chief infectious disease specialist of Georgia, Tengiz Tsertsvadze, said that this strain may already be in Georgia, although there has not yet been laboratory confirmation of infection.

"What happened a few years ago is in the past and today there is no basis for a repetition of such a situation", Azarashvili said on Imedi.

The Minister urged everyone not to sharpen attention on this topic and try to introduce a stressful situation into society. Azarashvili called the coronavirus one ordinary infection.

According to the Minister, when there was a coronavirus pandemic in Georgia and, in general, all over the world, there was a special regime and people's lives went according to these regimes.

"There is no basis for alarm, panic, and in general, we should no longer pay special attention to this", Azarashvili stressed.

The Minister stressed that the new names of subtypes that periodically appear on the Internet are only the subject of scientific study and they should not affect the mood of the population in any way.

In Georgia, on average, up to 300 new cases of COVID are detected per day. The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced the rapid spread of a new variant of omicron, the EG strain, in the world.5. Infectious disease specialists do not rule out that Georgia, like many countries of the world, should prepare for a new wave of coronavirus spread.

The first case of coronavirus in Georgia was detected on February 26, 2020. The victims of the infection in the country were 16,811 people. More than 2.8 million people out of 3.7 million people have been vaccinated against coronavirus.
