Almost half of Georgia's population lives on less than $5.5 a day

Almost half of Georgia's population lives on less than $5.5 a day, according to a study by the consulting company PMCG.

This amount is the poverty line for upper middle-income countries as classified by the World Bank. From 2017 to 2021, the proportion of the population living below the $5.5 a day poverty line increased from 43% to 46.6%.

As of 2021, 17% of Georgia's population lived on less than $3.2 a day (the World Bank's lower middle-income poverty line). In 2017, there were 16.1% of those.

The extremely poor population with less than $1.9 a day has decreased from 5% to 4% in five years.

Absolute poverty - data from «Saksat»

Absolute poverty shows the proportion of the population whose income and expenses are below the subsistence minimum. According to «Saksat», the nominal subsistence minimum for an average family in 2021 increased to 334 GEL.

The proportion of Georgia's population living below the absolute poverty line decreased from 21.9% to 17.5% from 2017 to 2021.

At the height of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, the number of people living below the absolute poverty line in the country increased by 1.8%. Villages were more vulnerable to the crisis, where the indicator increased immediately by 3.8%.

Poverty (lack of resources to lead a lifestyle that is standard for most of society) has decreased from 22.3% to 18.9% in five years.
