Georgian allergist-immunologist Bidzina Kulumbegov no longer sees the point in wearing masks outdoors and insists on the abolition of fines.
Since March 1, Georgia has relaxed or abolished several restrictions imposed due to the coronavirus. Procedures for entering the country have been simplified, there is no need to measure the temperature at the entrance to public institutions, the permissible number of restaurant visitors has increased, nightclubs have opened.
"The mandatory wearing of masks in open spaces should be abolished. If someone has a desire, let him wear ten masks, we will not interfere," Kulumbegov wrote on his Facebook page.
According to him, those who do not want to wear masks on the street do not need to be fined.
Earlier, the Georgian authorities stated that they do not plan to abolish the requirement to wear masks both indoors and in transport, and on the street. The decision will be made when the epidemiological situation, which has rapidly begun to improve, does not fully stabilize.
The fine for violating the rule of wearing a mask in Georgia is 20 lari (about $ 6), for repeated appearance in public places without a mask, the amount of the fine is doubled.
Mandatory mask mode both indoors and outdoors has been activated in Georgia since November 2020. They were allowed to give up masks on the street in June 2021, but not for long. Precautions were tightened again in August due to a sharp deterioration in the epidemiological situation.
In February 2022, Georgia passed the peak of the sixth wave of coronavirus. As of February 1, the daily infection rate exceeded 26 thousand. In recent days, the increase has averaged 2-3 thousand. The mortality rate has also decreased to 20-30 people per day.
