Georgia today celebrates its main national holiday — independence Day.

Georgia was declared an independent Republic on may 26, 2018 by the government led by social Democrat Noe Zhordania as a result of the collapse of the Transcaucasian Federation, which was formed, in turn, after the February revolution in Russia. A few days later, representatives of Azerbaijan and Armenia declared their independence in Tbilisi.

The first Democratic Republic of Georgia existed for two and a half years. Georgia regained its independence in 1991. The corresponding act, based on the results of a national referendum, was adopted by the Supreme Council of the Republic on April 9.

Traditionally, may 26 is celebrated in all regions of Georgia with concerts, fairs, exhibitions, educational, sports and cultural events.

Until 2013, independence day was also celebrated with a military parade on Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi. The government of the" Georgian dream " abandoned this tradition, replacing the parade with a solemn ceremony of taking the military oath by recruits in Freedom square.

This year, because of the coronavirus epidemic, the government for the first time refused to hold any mass events, even on the most important public holiday.

Just three days ago, the country's state of emergency ended and a two-month curfew was lifted. In addition, epidemiologists urge the population to continue to observe the rules of social distance and not to visit places of public congestion.

Prime Minister George Gakharia will celebrate this day together with military personnel at the base of the 4th mechanized brigade in Vaziani.
