Against the background of the coronavirus pandemic, the Georgian economy is suffering huge losses – foreign trade turnover for the four months of 2020 decreased by 11.8% compared to the same period in 2019, amounting to about 3.5 billion dollars (excluding unorganized trade). This is stated in the materials Of the national statistics service of the country "Sakstat".

In January-April, the export of Georgian products amounted to more than one billion dollars. This is 11.9% less than in January-April 2019. Imports fell by 11.8% to $ 2.46 billion. The negative trade balance was 1.46 billion dollars – 42.2% of the total foreign trade turnover.

What does Georgia trade in?

During the crisis, Georgia continued to trade all traditional goods: copper ores and concentrates, wines, ferroalloys, mineral waters, medicines, cars, gold, nuts, and so on.

In almost all categories, exports declined in January-April. Sales growth was recorded only in the category of copper ores and concentrates - by 10.4% - and gold-by 38.1%.

Exports of passenger cars in January-April decreased by 12.4%, ferroalloys – by 21.7%, wines – by 12.5%, nitrogen fertilizers – by 16.5%, and mineral waters – by 8.7%.

Oil and petroleum products, passenger cars, petroleum gas and hydrocarbon gas, copper ores and concentrates, medicines, wheat, electricity, telephones for cellular or other communications, and so on are imported to Georgia.

In January-April, imports of trucks increased by 19.7%, electricity – by 12.9% and oil gases and gaseous hydrocarbons – by 1%. At the same time, imports of passenger cars decreased by 23.4%, oil and petroleum products – by 19%, and medicines – by 8.1%.

Since the beginning of 2020, Turkey has exported more than 13.3 thousand tons of ferroalloys, 383.8 tons of knitwear, about 13.9 thousand tons of semi-finished carbon steel products and other goods.

More than 18.9 thousand tons of pipes and hollow profiles made of black metal, 219.4 tons of medicines, about 12.9 thousand tons of oil and petroleum products, and so on were imported from Turkey to Georgia.

In January-April, the volume of exports decreased by 11.4%, amounting to 395.7 million dollars – 11.4% of the total foreign trade turnover of Georgia.

About 803 thousand tons of oil gas and hydrocarbon gas, about 41.9 thousand tons of oil and petroleum products, electricity worth about 21.3 million dollars, copper ores and concentrates of more than 2.3 thousand tons and so on were imported from Azerbaijan to Georgia.

China (more than $ 346.1 million), Ukraine (more than $ 174 million), the United States (more than $ 162.7 million), Armenia (about $ 161.4 million), Bulgaria (more than $ 145.5 million), Germany (about $ 140 million), Italy (about $ 65.8 million).
