The coastal city of Georgia – Batumi, will become one of the first places in the world to open to foreign tourists, writes the London edition of Emerging Europe.

"Your choice of holiday destinations this year may be limited. But Georgia and its pearl on the Black sea are very open for business. Probably, there has never been a better time to visit it," the publication notes and recommends that 2 million of its readers visit Batumi.

"The measures taken to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in Georgia were extremely effective. The country has the lowest death rate among emerging market countries, with only 671 people confirmed to have the new coronavirus. Currently, there are only 266 active cases in the country, " the article says.

It was also noted that on may 15, Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia stated that there are no plans to extend the current state of emergency, which expires on may 22, and that the curfew restricting movement outside the house during the period from 9 to 6 hours will be lifted.

"This allowed Georgia to give the green light to resume domestic tourism from June 15 and open the borders to international travelers from July 1. Georgia is going to create a number of "green zones", starting with Batumi and Adjara, where the Chairman of the regional government Tornike Rizhvadze, who has done a lot to ensure that tourism can resume, noted that the social distance will be monitored on the beach. Adding that he is confident that both Georgians and international tourists will take into account the social distance," the article says.

The country even has a new slogan: "Georgia: a safe tourist destination".

"The world used to know us as the country of our ancient traditions of hospitality. Now the world recognizes us as a safe place. We need to use the new competitive advantage that our country has gained in the fight against the pandemic," the publication quotes Georgian economy Minister Natia Turnava as saying.

The article also notes the impressive economic growth of the city of Batumi.

"Rustaveli Avenue in Batumi, named after Georgia's most famous poet, stretches along The black sea coast, and many of the buildings that have appeared here over the past few years are luxury five-star hotels. Georgia is quite rightly proud of its beautiful alphabet, so much so that since 2011, a 130-meter tower stands on the embankment of Batumi as a testimony to the uniqueness of the alphabet," the article notes.

The author also tells readers about the moving sculpture "Ali and Nino", dedicated to the love story between a Muslim and a Christian, and also recommends visiting the unique Batumi Botanical garden.
