Covid-statistics of recent days suggest that the epidemic in Georgia is coming to an end and a large increase in new cases of coronavirus is not expected. This was stated on Public television by the doctor of medical Sciences, infectious diseases doctor Maya Butsashvili.

"Recently, the statistics are encouraging. There is clearly a positive trend, which really gives grounds to assume that the epidemic is already ending in our country, we can consider it passed and a rapid growth of new cases is not expected, " said Butsashvili.

At the same time, she stressed that even despite the encouraging figures, the country must be prepared for all scenarios, because today no one knows when the world will overcome the pandemic.

"Since this is a new virus, a coronavirus pandemic for the first time, all forecasts were at the level of forecasts. Various simulations have been made, but they are all assumptions. In General, when such forecasts are made, the most difficult scenario should be presented so that the country is ready for all possible options," the infectious disease specialist said.

Butsashvili noted that Georgia is distinguished by relatively low rates of virus spread. The doctor believes that this is due to the fact that the country very quickly began to carry out measures against the epidemic. In addition, she pointed to the effective work of epidemiologists who quickly established all contacts of infected people.

"Even before the first case was registered at the end of February, Georgia started taking preventive measures. In particular, there was control at airports, thermal screening, and borders with different countries were gradually closed. The study of contacts was very effective, " she added.

Butsashvili also recalled that the first case of coronavirus in Georgia was detected right at the border - in a citizen who was returning overland from Iran via Azerbaijan.

"We know that in Western Europe, in many countries, the first cases were established when there was already an internal spread of the disease," she said.

Localities where strict quarantine was in effect are gradually opening up. The authorities proceeded to run the economy, which was stopped on the background of the pandemic. However, until may 22, the country will be under a state of emergency, which provides for a number of strict restrictions.
