Victory day over fascism is celebrated today in Georgia

Today, Georgia is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the victory over fascism-may 9 is an official holiday in the country and a day off.

Every year on this day in Tbilisi, world war II veterans gather in Vake Park, where the Victory memorial and the monument to the Unknown soldier are installed.

Members of the Georgian government, representatives of political parties, non-governmental organizations and ordinary residents of the capital come to the Park to lay wreaths at the memorial and congratulate veterans.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, a state of emergency is in effect in Georgia until may 22 – any gatherings and cultural events, including outdoor ones, are prohibited. In addition, people over the age of 70 are not allowed to go outside, except to visit a nearby store, pharmacy, or hospital.

Police will be on duty at the entrances and exits of Vake Park today. Employees of the Ministry of internal Affairs of Georgia promise to monitor compliance with all restrictions.

Traditionally, the government allocates financial assistance to veterans on may 9. This year, participants in the war will receive 600 lari (about 190 dollars). Widows of veterans and their children who have limited health opportunities from birth will receive 300 lari (about 95 dollars) from the government.

In addition to the government, local authorities also provide assistance to veterans. As a rule, by may 9, municipalities ' mayors hand over food baskets or medicine vouchers to them.

According to the latest data, 371 participants of the Second world war currently live in Georgia, 149 of them in Tbilisi and 222 in the regions.

In 2018, there were 676 world war II veterans in Georgia by may 9, 948 in 2017, and 1,296 in 2016.

Georgia took part in world war II as part of the Soviet army and lost 10% of the country's population.

The territory of Georgia was not occupied by Germany and was not bombed, but more than 700,000 Georgian soldiers fought on the fronts of world war II in the fight against fascism from 1941 to 1945, more than half of them did not return home.

Tens of thousands of residents of Georgia were awarded Soviet government awards, 167 of them became Heroes of the Soviet Union. The most famous among them is Junior Sergeant Meliton Kantaria (1921-1993), who hoisted the flag of victory over the Reichstag together with Sergeant Mikhail Yegorov in may 1945.
