The European Union and the United Nations development Programme (UNDP) is launching a grant program worth 9 million lari (more than $ 2.8 million) to help Georgian villages during the COVID-19 crisis. This is reported by the press service of the EU representative office in Georgia.

The initiative aims to promote the development of non-farm businesses in rural areas, create permanent jobs, manage natural resources sustainably, and mitigate climate change. The program will be implemented jointly with the Ministry of agriculture of Georgia and the rural development Agency.

Start-up or growing non-agricultural enterprises will be able to receive a grant of up to 170 thousand lari for the project. Grants of up to 30 thousand lari are provided for improving the energy efficiency of enterprises in villages.

The program is aimed at eight municipalities-Akhalkalaki, Borjomi, Dedoplistskaro, Kazbegi, Keda, Khulo, lagodehi and Tetritskaro. The applicant does not have to live in these areas, but their projects must be linked to the target municipalities.

"The EU is mobilizing all possible resources to help Georgia overcome the current crisis. I am glad that the grant program will help Georgian villages, where economic development remains a problem even in normal situations, " said EU Ambassador to Georgia Karl Hartzel.

The UNDP resident representative in Georgia, Louise Winton, noted that "Georgia's exemplary response to the coronavirus pandemic saved many lives".

"Today we have the opportunity to promote green development in villages, which serves the well-being of people and the planet. Now we have a chance to promote green alternatives in rural areas that will benefit both people and the planet," Winton said.

Applications for participation in the grant program are accepted until August 1, 2020. Detailed information is available on this site.

The EU and UNDP are long-term supporters of rural development in Georgia. Within the framework of the European program for agriculture and rural development (ENPARD) for 2013-2022, Georgia has been allocated more than 600 million lari (179.5 million euros) in the form of EU assistance.

This assistance is intended to increase agricultural productivity, develop and create new economic opportunities in rural areas.
