The world Bank has provided Georgia with an $ 80 million financial assistance package to help the authorities ' efforts to mitigate and eliminate the medical and social consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, according to a statement on the world Bank's website.

Support for Georgia was allocated within the framework of the accelerated mechanism for combating coronavirus. This mechanism aims to Fund measures that help prevent, detect and respond to the threat posed by the coronavirus pandemic, as well as provide immediate social protection support to the most vulnerable populations.

Health emergency response measures include case detection and confirmation, expanded testing, and strengthening the health system for case management.

In addition, the loan funds will support the income of poor and vulnerable families by expanding the targeted social assistance program and providing temporary cash transfers to workers who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic.

"With our quick support, we are helping to save lives and find a livelihood for those affected by the pandemic at this difficult time," said Sebastian Molineus, the world Bank's regional Director for the South Caucasus.

At the same time, he named the amount of aid for Georgia from the world Bank.

"We estimate that the total funding package for Georgia will amount to approximately $ 200 million of new funding, in addition to the approximately $ 300 million already allocated for projects for 2020-2021 that address broader development needs such as digital communications and infrastructure," Molineus said.

Georgian Finance Minister Ivane Machavariani expressed his gratitude to the world Bank for its assistance

"I would like to emphasize that our partners have been actively involved in negotiations with the government of Georgia since the very first days of the pandemic.
