Vice-President of the European Commission Margaritis Schinas said that no concessions will be made for the admission of the countries of the Western Balkans and other countries to the European Union.

He stated this in his speech on Monday at the Summit in Thessaloniki, reports "European Truth" with reference to Ekathimerini.

"As for the efforts of the Western Balkans and the larger region to join the EU, there are two clear red lines", he said.

"The first requires the candidate to have absolute confidence in the country's ability to respect democracy, human rights and the rule of law, as well as to support the fundamental values and social model of the EU", Schinas stressed.

The second red line, which Schinas stressed, provides that the candidate countries "will accept without any reservations the EU's geopolitical orientation in today's unstable global sphere."

This should warn states "who believe that they can combine their own interests with European values", Schinas added.

At the summit of EU leaders in December, a decision will be considered on whether to start accession negotiations with Ukraine. Hungary, which promises to block a positive decision for Kiev, may now be on the way to the "green light".
