According to Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili, acting head of the National Bank of Georgia Natia Turnava should resign. The President stated this at a briefing and added that she regrets the decision regarding Turnava's appointment.

"I have to say that I deeply regret my decision and apologize for it... First of all, the acting president, who failed to protect the independence of the National Bank, and on the contrary, damaged this principle herself, should resign", Zourabichvili said.

According to her, it is possible and necessary to declare the unilateral decision null and void by a collective decision of the National Bank Council.

The President believes that this will be a real action of the Council to preserve the independence of the National Bank.

"This is possible despite the resignation of three vice-presidents, because they still have 2 months to continue their powers. The deadline for dismissal is in 2 months. The Board is fully functional and can make any decisions. These are steps that need to be taken urgently to avoid more serious reputational damage to the country. And international reactions are also expected.

This is the right way to protect those achievements called economic and financial sustainability of Georgia, as well as international reputation in this industry. No one has the right to make such decisions because of narrow interests. At the same time, I want to welcome the very clear position of the private banking sector, which is really what this country needs today", - stated the President.
