Currently, the Swiss sound alarm system in case of natural disasters is installed in Georgia only in the zone of the Devdorak glacier, in the Kazbegi municipality, IPN reported with reference to the National Environment Agency.

In all other cases, there is a general early warning system via SMS (for three days, for a day, for several hours) and messages are distributed in the event of a forecast of extreme weather events – heavy rains, increased wind, drought, abnormally high or low temperatures.

“Such early warnings cannot be prepared in case of rapidly and suddenly developing specific disasters, including avalanches, landslides, mudslides… In such events, only a sound signal can be effective”, the Agency noted. They also said that work is underway to improve the risk warning system.

The topic of how the system of natural disaster alerts works in Georgia has become relevant after a series of tragedies this summer – a landslide in the village of Shovi and floods and landslides in the villages of Guria.

* The Devdorak Glacier is a valley glacier in the Greater Caucasus on the northeastern slope of Kazbek. It is located mainly within the Kazbegi Municipality of Georgia on the border with Russia. A small part in the upper reaches of the glacier belongs to the territory of the Russian Federation. It belongs to the number of active glaciers, is known for powerful landslides, which are called sergi. The last such collapse occurred in 2014.
