In 2022, 25,935 Georgian citizens applied for temporary asylum in the EU with an initial request, Eurostat reported.

This is twice, by 108%, more than in 2021.

As a result, Georgia entered the top ten countries in the world in terms of the number of initial applications for asylum in the EU, moving from 11th to eighth position, the Georgian service of Radio Liberty notes.

According to the statistics of asylum requests in the EU countries, Georgia is ahead of neighboring countries – Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia, with the exception of Turkey.

According to the total number of appeals (primary and subsequent) in 2021, Georgia was in 10th place (14,660 appeals), and in 2022 it moved to 9th place (28,385 appeals).

The previous record was set in 2019 before the pandemic, when more than 22 thousand people from Georgia decided to seek asylum in the EU.

In 2022, Georgian citizens most often applied for initial temporary asylum in the countries:

• France – 8,905 applications;

• Germany – 7965 applications;

• Italy – 3240 applications;

• Ireland – 2705 applications;

• Belgium – 840 applications;

• Spain – 660 applications;

• Switzerland – 660 applications.

In total, 881,200 people applied for asylum in the EU for the first time in 2022. This is more than in 2021, but lower than in 2015 and 2016, when the figure reached one million.

Almost half, 46%, of asylum applications in 27 EU countries came from Asian countries, up to 22% from Africa.

Over the past seven years, more than 115,000 Georgian citizens have applied for asylum in the European Union.

The number of applications from Georgian citizens by year, initial and repeated applications (data from different European organizations differ, but slightly, the difference may be 200-300 people):

• 2022 — 28 385;

• 2021 — 14 660 (pandemic, restrictions);

• 2020 — 8 905 (pandemic, restrictions);

• 2019 — 22 765;

• 2018 — 20 950;

• 2017 — 12 060 (introduction of visa-free travel with the EU);

• 2016 — 8 775.

According to the PMCG consulting company, a significant part of Georgian labor migrants live and work abroad illegally. According to the organization, from 2010 to 2020, the total number of people who emigrated from Georgia amounted to 861 thousand people — this is 23% of the country's population.
