German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock met with Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili.

The German Foreign Minister arrived in Georgia on an official visit a few months before the decision of the European Council on Georgia's obtaining the status of a candidate in the EU. Germany is one of the countries that will make a decision on Georgia.

"Germany has a great interest in Georgia, in people, history, wonderful nature and cuisine. Interest is also evident in the growth of German tourists wishing to visit Georgia... The words "khinkali" and "khachapuri" are no longer alien to these people, despite the fact that they are difficult to pronounce," Baerbock said.

The diplomat also admired the strong civil society in Georgia, namely the activists who in early March came out to protest in Tbilisi with the flags of the European Union, speaking out against the scandalous bills on "foreign agents".

"We can be proud of a strong civil society. Georgia is the EU. We were convinced of this not in the past weeks, but over the past year.... Therefore, I came to Georgia with a specific message. We want to see Georgia in the EU, we want Georgians to enrich the EU. We will support you on this path, you have friends in Brussels and Berlin, on whom you can rely," the diplomat said.

The European Union will assess Georgia's fulfillment of the 12 conditions necessary to obtain the status of a candidate for EU membership in the spring of 2023, and the official conclusion of the European Commission will be in the fall.
