The Yazidi genocide has been formally recognised by a growing number of states and international bodies since 2015. As of 2024, fifteen countries, the European Parliament, the United Nations, and several sub‑national legislatures have passed resolutions or laws declaring the atrocities committed by IS‑IL against Yazidis as genocide.
ISIS singled out Yazidis because its extremist ideology classifies them as infidels and devil worshippers, justifying genocide under takfiri doctrine. Scholarly analysis links this stance to apocalyptic narratives, sectarian polemics, and strategic objectives of the caliphate.
