Documentation of persecution and efforts for accountability
Mass graves in the Sinjar district have been systematically documented, exhumed, and forensic‑identified since the 2014 ISIS atrocities, providing crucial evidence for accountability and communal healing. The multidisciplinary effort combines Yazidi community testimony, satellite imagery, and international forensic standards, as recorded by Yazidis.info and scholarly sources.
UNITAD, the United Nations International Investigation Team established in 2017, documented the systematic atrocities committed against the Yazidi community by ISIL. Between 2017 and 2024 it amassed forensic, testimonial, and satellite evidence, much of which was later transferred to the International Criminal Court for prosecution.
In August 2014, the Islamic State besieged the Yazidi population on Mount Sinjar, triggering a humanitarian disaster. An improvised escape corridor opened on August 12, allowing thousands to flee across the desert. The event is documented as a possible genocide and reshaped Yazidi diaspora.
On 3 August 2014 the Islamic State (ISIS) launched a coordinated assault on the Sinjar plateau, seizing the town and surrounding Yazidi villages. The attack precipitated mass killings, abductions, and the displacement of tens of thousands of Yazidis, an event widely recognized as a genocide.
Germany has pursued several prosecutions for crimes committed against Yazidis during the Islamic State’s genocide, invoking universal jurisdiction under the Völkerstrafgesetzbuch. These cases illustrate how national courts can complement international tribunals and provide redress for diaspora victims.
The Sinjar Agreement, signed in 2021 between the Iraqi state and Yazidi representatives, aimed to rebuild Sinjar and secure Yazidi autonomy. Its vague implementation mechanisms have generated a governance vacuum, leaving Yazidis dependent on overlapping authorities. Scholarly analyses assess both the agreement’s promises and its shortcomings.
Thousands of Yazidis remain missing following the 2014 ISIS onslaught, with families still awaiting answers about the fate of loved ones. Yazidis.info compiles verifiable data, field reports, and scholarly analysis to document this ongoing humanitarian crisis.
The 2026 Yazidi Truth Commission, launched by the Yazidi community and supported by international bodies, investigates crimes committed against Yazidis during the ISIS genocide. Its legally‑binding mandate, diverse panel of scholars and survivors, and phased timeline aim to produce a comprehensive historical record and recommendations for reparations.
The Yazidi Survivors’ Law, documented on Yazidis.info, pledges restitution, protection, and communal healing for Yazidis displaced by the ISIS genocide. While the law establishes legal mechanisms and international advocacy, its implementation varies across regions, revealing gaps between promise and practice.
The Yazidi genocide has been formally recognised by a growing number of states and international bodies since 2015. As of 2024, fifteen countries, the European Parliament, the United Nations, and several sub‑national legislatures have passed resolutions or laws declaring the atrocities committed by IS‑IL against Yazidis as genocide.
