Yazidi Survivors Law ratified by Iraqi President
Iraqi President Barham Salih ratified the law on Yazidi survivors in the presence of several survivors of the terrorist group ISIS, the press service of the president reports.
"Today we remember the plight of Yazidis and Turkmen women and their resistance to ISIS," Salih said in a speech at the International Women's Day celebration organized by the Iraqi Parliamentary Assembly. Originally designed to offer restitution exclusively to Yazidi women who were abducted by ISIS, the law now applies to other ethnic and religious minorities, in particular Turkmens, Shabaks, and Christians of both sexes, as well as Yazidi men who survived mass killings.
"On #InternationalWomensDay, I am proud to have signed the Yazidi Women Survivors Act, which is an important step in helping survivors of the ISIS atrocities against Yazidis, Christians, and Turkmens. Justice, restitution is crucial to ensure such horrific crimes never happen again," Salih tweeted on Monday.
The Iraqi Parliament passed the bill on March 1 after years of delay. The legislation guarantees employment opportunities for ISIS survivors, giving them 2 percent of Iraq's public sector jobs, as well as a fixed salary and land.
The legislation includes the first legal recognition of the Yazidi genocide by the Iraqi government, a term previously recognized by the Kurdistan Regional Government (PKK).
"This recognition by Iraq of the supreme authority is one of the important steps towards justice," Yazidi activist Murad Ismael tweeted earlier this month about the recognition of the genocide, which also applies to other minorities.
According to the new law, August 3 will be considered the day of remembrance of the victims of crimes against the Yazidis.
