From Terror to Healing A Long Road to Justice for Yazidi Survivors
For Essa Sarab, a member of Iraq's Yazidi minority, receiving a monthly payment through the compensation programme is a small victory on the long and difficult road to healing and justice.
"The monthly payment is welcome, but it is not enough," says Essa, 21, who has been held captive by ISIS terrorists for five years.
In March 2021, the Iraqi parliament approved a law aimed at compensation and reforms for Yazidi genocide survivors, including monthly payments and residential land. Nevertheless, many, including Essa, continue to fight for justice. It is known that thousands of Yazidi women and children have been enslaved by ISIS militants, captured and sold into slavery. Although progress has been made in the implementation of compensation measures, some aspects, including education, remain unresolved. However, the law also provides the right to education and rehabilitation support for survivors. Most families are still standing in bureaucratic queues waiting for compensation.
Essa and many others are awaiting further compensation measures, believing that all articles of the law must be implemented to at least partially restore their rights and dignity.
