The EU Observer Mission in Georgia sums up the results of 15 years of activity. The head of the monitoring mission, Dimitrios Karabalis, held a press conference.

According to the head of the monitoring mission, the EU Observer Mission together with the OSCE continues to call for the restoration of full functionality of checkpoints. According to Dimitrios Karabalis, greater freedom of movement will significantly improve the daily life of the population along the administrative borders affected by the conflict.

"When we talk about restricting freedom of movement, we should also talk about the current so-called borderization. Borderization is not really the right term, I mean strengthening the administrative border line with the use of fences, barbed wire and watchtowers. Women, men, children and elderly people living on both sides of the administrative border continue to suffer. This deprives them of access to land and water, religious sites. This deprives children of the education they choose. These ruins the dreams of many people about a successful future. Villages, neighbors and even families remain divided. I would like to repeat our main message once again: for 15 years, the EU Observer Mission has played a crucial role in ensuring stability and reducing tensions in Georgia and in the region as a whole. Our presence on the ground over the past 15 years demonstrates the EU's long-term commitment to strengthening peace and security. We remain committed to our mission to improve the lives and safety of local communities. We will stay in Georgia as long as necessary," the head of the monitoring Mission of EU observers said.
