European Council president accepts Zourabichvili's invitation to visit Georgia

Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili has invited European Council President Charles Michel to visit Tbilisi, the press service said following talks in Brussels.

It is noted that the visit may take place in the near future.

Salome Zourabichvili stressed the importance of granting Georgia the status of EU candidate and underscored the unshakable will of the Georgian people to join the European Union.

Charles Michel praised the role of the President of Georgia in terms of promoting Georgia on the European path and overcoming the differences within the party. He once again emphasized his strong belief that the future of Georgia is in the European Union - stated in the press release.

According to Charles Michel, the European Commission will finalize the report on 12 recommendations for Georgia's EU candidate status in fall.  The issue of next steps will be on the agenda of the European Council towards the end of the year.

Among the directions in which Georgia needs to strengthen the work Michel named judicial reform, issues of media freedom and development of civil society, de-oligarchization and depolarization.

The date of Charles Michel's upcoming visit to Georgia has not yet been announced.
