The First Tbilisi Photo Biennale: Historical Photographs of Three 19th-Century Cities

The first Tbilisi Photo Biennale, a series of exhibitions dedicated to the 19th century, will open this week in Tbilisi.

At several sites in the capital there will be archival photographs, which will tell about the amazing metamorphosis of the three cities: Tbilisi, Berlin and Vilnius. At the same time master classes of famous photographers will be held.

The exhibitions are timed to coincide with the Day of Photography on May 25, at the initiative of the Association of Photographers of Georgia. The project is funded by the municipality of Tbilisi with the support of the embassies of Lithuania and Germany.

Georgia

- Tbilisi, Birthplace - 19th century

- Tbilisi Academy of Arts, exhibition hall (22 Griboedova str.).

- Opening: May 24, 18.00 - till June 1

- Works by: Alexander Roinashvili, Alexander Ivanitsky, Dmitri Yermakov, David Korganov.

- Unique photographs of life in Tbilisi in the 19th century - a synthesis of several genres: landscape, portrait, street photography, still life.  But most importantly, the soul of Tbilisi lives in them.

Germany:

- Berlin 1853-1865.

- Georgian Museum of Fine Arts (7, Shota Rustaveli Avenue)

- Opening: May 25, 20.00 - till June 1

- Works by Leopold Ahrendts, Berlin's first urban photographer. About the transformation of a quiet residence city into a growing megalopolis and the replacement of the classic architecture of the city by massive constructions.

Lithuania

- Vilnius - 700 years

- Baia Gallery (19A Pavel Ingorokva St.).

- Opening: May 25, 18.00 - till May 29

- Works by: Józef Czechowicz, Stanisław Filibert Fleury, Jan Bułhak.

Old Vilnius, how it used to be and what people lived in it. The mysteries of the amazing city, which have survived to this day.
