Georgia's ruling party commented on the "Lavrov family" wedding scandal - the arrival of the Russian Foreign Minister's daughter with her husband.

Georgian Dream states that Ekaterina Vinokurova and her husband have not violated the law "About Occupation", which is in force in Georgia, and this should be the guideline for letting them into the country. The violation in this case would have been their trips to Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region in the past without permission from official Tbilisi.

"I do not know whether it was Lavrov's son-in-law or another person, it does not matter very much. What is important is that these people violated the law of occupation or not.  If they didn't, they had every right to enter Georgia", said Georgian Dream Secretary General and Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze.

He called the scandal over the arrival of the Lavrov family members "mere speculation.

He noted that Georgia has not imposed its own personal sanctions and has not joined the personal sanctions of other countries against Russian citizens.

"We have openly stated that we are not hiding anything, or what is there to hide? We are not imposing sanctions, statements to this effect have been made many times, the most important and important thing is the interests of our country.

If we look at our past and recent history, we see many mistakes we have made that have had very serious consequences for our country and people. Accordingly, we must not make these mistakes again, on the contrary, we must pursue the interests of our country and our people with pragmatic policies", said Kaladze.

Georgian Dream Chairman Irakli Kobakhidze said that applying sanctions to family members contradicts human rights.

"It should be said according to what criteria the state is guided by when certain people enter the country. As you know ... we did not impose our sanctions on the Russian Federation, and the reasons have been explained more than once. Our main criterion is whether the law on occupation has been violated or not", Kobakhidze said.

He added that if we consider the issue of personal sanctions theoretically, they can apply only to him who directly committed the crime.

"A family member cannot be subject to sanctions, such an approach is contrary to human rights standards. I am an expert on human rights, once studied this field in Germany and I can tell you directly, boldly, that sanctions against a family member are grossly contrary to human rights standards, and this is a very mild assessment", Kobakhidze said.

According to him, the purpose of the scandal and protests over the wedding story was to escalate the situation in the country, unrest and again voiced the thesis that the opposition wants to open a "second front" against Russia in Georgia.
