"From the humanitarian point of view ... everything and all decisions that will facilitate the life, movement and doing business of our citizens is definitely positive and welcome", Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said, assessing Moscow's decision to abolish the visa regime with Georgia and restore direct flights.

The Prime Minister reiterated that 1 million ethnic Georgians live in Russia and have family members, relatives and friends here and "it's very important to facilitate their movement, their relatives' visits, etc... This is a positive fact and a positive decision. According to him, in addition to the fact that the restoration of direct flights to Russia will remove "huge discomfort" and costs for citizens of Georgia in terms of movement, it is also a component of trade and economic relations, "one small component, a detail, not the main one.

"We have trade and economic relations with Russia, it is the merit of our government that trade with Russia has also been restored, and the previous government sought to do this, for which they did everything", he stressed, adding that many other countries, including China, Israel, Azerbaijan and Armenia have direct air communication with Russia. "All of these countries today have direct air links to Russia, with unauthorized planes, I want to emphasize so that no one misleads our society."

As for Moscow's decision to abolish the visa regime with Georgia, the prime minister stressed that Ukraine had a visa-free regime with Russia before us, and Moldova still has it today. "We also remind that Moldova is a member of the CIS", the prime minister added.

In this context, he also recalled that after the Russian-Georgian war in August 2008, the "United National Movement authorities" unilaterally abolished the visa regime for Russia. "You remember that (former President Mikhail Saakashvili) personally greeted Russian tourists." "Instead of showing some reasonable state policy and taking a stand, demanding at least a visa-free regime, they unilaterally removed the visa regime without any conditions. I want to remind the society about this fact", - he stressed. apsny.ge
