Although Yazidis have been subjected to more than 74 ethnic cleansing over their history, they still cling to their heritage and culture, including their traditional clothing, which they consider their historical and religious identity.

Yazidi women's and men's costumes in Iraq vary according to the classes and clans within the followers of the religion, which is considered one of the oldest eastern religions, and its emergence dates back thousands of years.

According to Yazidi researcher Elias Kirani, he, like many other Yazidis, wears traditional clothing on official days, such as during Yazidi New Year, which falls on the first Wednesday of April each year according to the oriental calendar, as well as on religious occasions, holidays and rituals.

The researcher explains that Yazidi national costumes represent Yazidi cultural, historical, civilizational and religious identity, which Yazidis have adhered to for thousands of years in order to preserve their heritage, cultural and religious identity.

The choice of Yazidi clothing begins with fabrics woven from natural materials, then sewn with precision and detail that harmonize with the climate and atmosphere in which Yazidis live, giving flexibility to movements in daily activities, challenging the harshness of nature in all its details.

Yazidi cleric, Faher Khalaf of Sinjar, explains that "the clergy in Yazidi religion wear a special white robe, indicating the world, which is distinguished by its beauty and bright whiteness, the clergy, must wear these clothes during religious rituals, religious events and festivals.

Throughout the millennia Yazidis have managed to preserve from extinction their traditional costumes, and although minor changes have arisen in historical periods in the male and female costumes of religious followers, these changes have not occurred in detail and basic elements.

A writer specializing in Yazidi heritage, Nisreen Garbi Nasser, sheds light on the most famous types of Yazidi costumes and their differences between clans and classes of religion.

Representatives of some classes and clans of Yazidis of Iraq, namely men wear conical headdresses made of sheep's wool, others wear red jasper (Jamdani) as a headdress.

The women of their Khorkani clan, for example, wear a kufi, which is similar to a turban, and the men wear a "dishdasha" headband. The sheikh in Dohuk and its environs wear clothes similar to traditional Kurdish clothing, and women's clothing differs from that of the rest of Yazidi regions.

The headdress is considered an integral part of Yazidi women's clothing and is now made of cloth, but in the past most Yazidi women wore a headdress with silver and gold coins, which has changed over time.
