Opposition MPs Ana Natsvlishvili and Armaz Akhvlediani have initiated a bill to ban pyrotechnics.

They propose to ban storage, import, sale and use of fireworks. The only exception is F1 category pyrotechnics, which can be used in confined spaces. All other pyrotechnics can be used by government order in special cases.

Lawmakers stressed that pyrotechnics in Georgia are used uncontrolled, and often their use causes injuries, as well as damage to nature. Noise caused by pyrotechnics also creates problems.

The bill provides fines for pyrotechnics use - 1000 and 5000 GEL for individuals and legal entities respectively. A repeat violation within a year would result in criminal penalties.

Discussing the bill, MPs cited statistics showing that during the first three months of 2023, 87 citizens were injured from pyrotechnics.

Deputies also noted that they began working on the issue on the basis of appeals from citizens and stressed that the existing regulations (such as the ban on the sale to minors) are not respected. The authors of the initiative also noted that they had consulted with environmental organizations and studied the practices of different countries.
