Markets and chain supermarkets will receive tax benefits, exemption from VAT and income tax, in the case of transferring the remains of suitable food products to charity – a legislative initiative has been submitted to parliament.

The bill is called "On the reduction of food losses and food waste and gratuitous food aid." The authors are 11 deputies from the Georgian Dream.

"In Georgia, a very large amount of food is sent to the landfill. Given that too many people live below the poverty line, a bill has been developed that, on the one hand, will reduce waste, and on the other, will create an opportunity to provide food to those who need it ... We are talking about non–perishable products: sugar, coffee, cereals, and so on,” said one of the initiators the bill, Deputy Khatia Tsilosani.

According to her, the authors of the bill have already held consultations with restaurateurs and representatives of the catering sector, who stated that they are interested in such an initiative.

The explanatory note to the bill notes that a charitable organization will be created for the collection and distribution of products and an authorization system and a database of organizations that will give surplus products to charity will be introduced, the business portal reports BM.ge.

If the bill is adopted, it will enter into force on January 1, 2025.
