Helsinki Commission recommends not to adopt the law on "foreign agents"
"An intentional gift to Russia" — such an assessment was given by the Helsinki Commission to the bills on "foreign agents" initiated by the "Power of the People".
We are talking about analogues of the Russian law on "agents of foreign influence". According to numerous statements of the European Union, they contradict 12 points, the implementation of which is necessary for Georgia to obtain the status of a candidate in the EU.
"The law on foreign agents introduced in Georgia is an attack on the weakening democracy in the country, a deliberate gift to Russia and a direct challenge to the consistent Euro-Atlantic choice of the Georgian people. It does not look like FARA in any way", Helsinki Commission said in a statement.
The Commission also adds that the United States values its strategic partnership with Georgia, but this bill is aimed at weakening these relations — "and this is an open invitation to the occupier of Russia, the occupying Russia, which will bring with it corruption, vassalage and disloyalty."
"We call on the Georgian government to reject the proposed law and reaffirm its commitment to democracy", the document says.
