Sinjar will form its own forces to control Yazidi district
The administration of the Yazidi city of Sinjar in the Iraqi province of Nineveh has begun registering those who wish to join the local self-defense forces to replace armed groups and restore security in the area.
"Currently, the registration of the 2,500-strong local police force has begun in Sinjar. We expect the Iraqi Government to allocate a budget for these forces within the framework of the Sinjar Agreement. Once registration is completed, we hope that these forces will be trained to replace the forces currently operating. The self—Defense forces will consist of the local Yazidi population", Acting Mayor of Sinjar Naif Saido said in an interview with BasNews.
In an attempt to restore normal life in Sinjar and facilitate the return of temporarily displaced persons (IDPs), the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) in 2020 helped conclude the Sinjar Agreement between Erbil and Baghdad, according to which the federal government should solve security and political problems in close coordination with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
The agreement has not yet been implemented, and several armed groups, including the pro-Iranian popular mobilization forces, continue to operate in Sinjar. Yazidis hope that the creation of local forces will help restore security and encourage the remaining IDPs to return to their hometown.
