The European Union warned Georgia to be vigilant to prevent circumvention of sanctions against Russia and called for support for aviation sanctions.

This was stated by the press speaker of the European Commission's External Relations Service, Peter Stano, commenting on the discussions about the possibility of restoring direct flights between Georgia and Russia.

"Due to Russia's illegal aggression against Ukraine, the European Union has imposed sanctions on Russian aviation ... The European Union calls on Georgia to join the sanctions imposed by the European Union and other countries against Russia in the aviation sector and to remain vigilant against any possible attempts to circumvent sanctions," Stano said in a letter in response to a request from Netgazeti.

At the same time, he noted that the EU sanctions regime is considering the possibility of imposing sanctions against those who participate or support a possible circumvention of EU sanctions against Russia.

In addition, the representative of the European Union warned that due to the current sanctions of Russia, it is difficult to update the fleet of aircraft and their operation becomes dangerous.

Earlier, the US State Department said that the resumption of flights between Georgia and Russia would carry the threat of sanctions against companies that serve Russian companies at Georgian airports.

"The entire Western community has distanced itself from this brutal regime — now is not the time to step up cooperation with Russia," the State Department said in a commentary for Voice of America.

The possibility of restoring air communication with Georgia since the end of last year has been announced by the Russian side. In Moscow, the comments of officials at the same time several times expressed approval of the policy of the Georgian authorities for a restrained position against the background of events around Ukraine.

The chairman of the ruling party of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, said that the restoration of air traffic is of "great importance" for the natives of Georgia living in Russia and "will only be welcomed."

At the same time, President Salome Zurabishvili categorically opposed it. She stated that it sounds "incomprehensible", "when all our partner countries express in word or deed maximum solidarity with the selfless struggle of Ukraine".
